The Big Why

The Lewiston Farmers’ Market Association (LFMA) provides area farmers, fisherpeople, horticulturalists, food producers and artisans with a means to sell their products directly to the community; ensures equitable access to local, healthy food and goods for Lewiston and surrounding communities; and facilitates place-making, community engagement, and relationship building. Incorporated in 2021, the LFMA is driven by a diverse vendor membership and led by a Board of Directors made up of market vendors and community members. The Lewiston Farmers’ Market, the LFMA’s signature initiative, is a family friendly farmers’ market operating right in the heart of Lewiston Auburn since 2004. As the longest running continuous farmers market in the region, the Lewiston Farmers’ Market serves as a key access point for fresh, affordable, Maine grown food and goods and a multi-cultural hub. The market’s many community programs, including the statewide Maine Harvest Bucks program, help families and individuals, young and old, stretch their dollar and put more fresh, healthy food on their plates while deepening connection with one another and to their food system. Since 2022, the LFMA has been place-making and investing in the shared social and physical infrastrucutre of the historic Lewiston riverfront district in the Central Androscoggin Valley. The LFMA has been working in partnership with the City of Lewiston to take root in, improve, and beautify a site along the river that is adjacent to a large park and hub for community events in the area. Situating the market in this location meets goals highlighted in the River Island Master Plan along with the LFMA’s strategic goals. In 2022, the LFMA also worked with the City to create a draft ordinance for farmers’ markets to help streamline processes associated with operating a market in the City. Due to leadership changes at both entities the ordinance finalization stalled. With new Market Management in place the LFMA will be picking up this work again along with a focus on a more permanent site arrangement, continued site beautification and the cultivation of robust, engaged, resourced leadership for the future.

Milestones

The Lewiston Farmers’ Market incorporated as an independent Association in 2021 with a multi-stakeholder Board of Directors comprised of vendors and community members. The LFMA moved to a semi-permanent location by the river front securing a multi-year MOU with the City of Lewiston. With support from the City of Lewiston the LFMA has worked to place-make and improve the location including planting fruit trees, perennials, and putting in place semi-permanent structures. The LFMA created a draft ordinance of farmers’ markets with City input. The LFMA also secured a multi- year grant and hired it’s first ever year round Association Manager.
