The Big Why
The New England Food Vision aims to build the capacity to produce at least 50% of our food by 2060, and much of this depends on increasing climate resilient agricultural production in Maine. Greater Auburn and Lewiston have a long tradition of farming brought over by European settlers and are well-positioned to expand the farming sector with its quality farmland, existing farm businesses, and unique opportunities with robust immigrant farming initiatives. Many New American students’ families have strong agricultural heritage. Some families have access to land to pass on cultural knowledge but have expressed desire to have this paired with more curriculum that teaches the science and technique of farming. Other families, lack access to land to teach children these skills at all. Creating an agricultural training program creates critical workforce pathways and opportunities for learning across generations and cultures. The Lewiston Regional Technical Center (LRTC) is an award winning member of Maine’s network of career and technical education (CTE) schools. The LRTC offers a wide range hands-on, career-oriented education in a variety of programs. For many reasons LRTC could be a natural home for an agricultural traning program geared towards training the next generation of farmers as other CTE’s in Maine do. However, Before the program can be considered seriously, a further SWOT analysis must be done to better understand the demand and viability for such a program.
