The Big Why

There are rougly a dozen food pantries operating in Lewiston Auburn led by non-profit service organizations, mosques and churches. Sites located in the downtown of Lewiston are within blocks of one another operating on back to back days. The largest pantry in the area, St. Mary’s Nutrition Center, serves approximately 500 households each week over two days with their biggest day seeing 300 households throughout 5 hours. A nearby resource center, day shelter and diaper bank, Trinity Jubilee Center, serves upwards of 200 households on one day through their food pantry. Each of these sites either receives an on site delivery, or organizes a pick up, from Good Shepherd Food Bank, the state wide Food Bank for Maine. The diversity of pantries enables each to serve the communities they interact with directly thereby providing more tailored support and often times greatest impact. However, pantries are often duplicating services and each expending tremendous resources and energy with minimal cross pantry coordination or communication. Streamlined coordination and increased communication among patries would ensure greater efficiency and resource conservation ultimately fostering better services for community members in need and helping pantries improve capacity and reduce burnout. Additionally, a regular mechanism for working together would build greater capacity to coordinate during times of crisis, which area pantries do regularly as well as a deeper understanding of needs and issues concerning overlapping or shared communities between pantries.
